Project "Glowing Plants" to replace shining plants with artificial light is ongoing

A life that uses electricity generates much CO 2, a project that produces luminescent plants by gene recombination and replaces artificial light with plants "Glowing Plants"Is progressing. We have already succeeded in shining small plants and we are currently recruiting projects for investment at Kickstarter, a cloud-funding platform, to make larger plants emit light.

Details of development etc. can be seen from the following movie.

Glowing Plants is a project to replace electricity with plants, to inspire people and to convey the potential of biology.

Studies on luminescent plants have not been new, and since the 1980's, enzymes necessary for bioluminescenceLuciferaseIt is recent years that bacteria and plants have been made using. And this project was inspired by the study of luminescent bacteria at the University of Cambridge.

The development team plans to change the DNA sequence of the target plant by determining the sequence of DNA using a genomic compiler that can assemble DNA.

This is Antony Evans, a project member.

Scientist Kyle Taylor.

One of the objectives of this research is to conduct more diverse and open science research, and from now on, DNA sequence data obtained in the development process will be released as an open source for non-commercial licenses .

I can get seeds of luminescent plants with a contribution of $ 40 (about 4000 yen), and if I make a contribution of $ 80 (about 8000 yen) I can get seeds with flower vases made by recycling the bulbs, but unfortunately orders It seems that it is limited from the United States.

Because the seeds of luminescent plants are not scheduled for commercial sale, they are supposed to be able to get only in this project. The deadline is 2 pm on June 7, 2013.
