Genuine or Forgery? Autographed Illustration of EVANGELION up to bid

Handwritten illustrations and autographs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the character designer of Neon Genesis Evangelion and author of its manga adaption, were up to bid in an online-auction.

The thing is, well, counterfeit might be too gorgeous a word for this one, it genuinely looks like an anime-obsessed-10-year-old's first attempt at fan-art. Could it be authentic?

According to the auction site, the exhibiter came to a financially difficult situation and decided to sell his treasured collection . Among the items up to bid were illustrations of Asuka Langley Soryu and Rei Ayanami.

This is supposed to be Asuka . Looks more Nadia than Asuka.

You can tell this is Rei, but a far cry from the authentic illustration that fetched 860,000 yen (about 9,246 dollars) at an auction before.

The exhibiter claims he's bought the Asuka version at the bidding price of 200,000 yen (about 2,170 USD) and the Rei version at 600,000 yen (about 6,520 dollars) in a previous auction.

In the end, Asuka was knocked down at 17,000 yen (about 185 dollars), Rei at 3,400 yen (about 37 dollars). It's hard to tell whether the bidders took it seriously or not, but there is, however slightly, a chance that these were authentic. As counterfeits are generally assumed to look genuine, one could never be sure.
