Apple is reportedly testing the Apple Pencil for a foldable iPhone.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who is well-versed in Apple's internal affairs, Apple is testing a new Apple Pencil for the rumored foldable iPhone , tentatively called the ' iPhone Ultra ,' which is currently under development.

Apple is scheduled to hold an announcement event on September 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM local time (September 10, 2026 at 2:00 AM Japan time). This is expected to be the annual new iPhone announcement event held in early September, during which Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 18 series and the company's first foldable iPhone, the 'iPhone Ultra.'

Regarding the iPhone Ultra, reporter Gurman reported that Apple is testing the Apple Pencil as a dedicated accessory. However, it seems unlikely that the Apple Pencil will be released at the same time as the iPhone Ultra.
According to reports, Apple has created and tested a prototype of the Apple Pencil for the iPhone Ultra in-house and is considering releasing it. The prototype Apple Pencil for the iPhone Ultra is shorter than the regular Apple Pencil and is designed to fit the size of the iPhone Ultra. Like the regular Apple Pencil, it is designed to attach magnetically to the side of the iPhone Ultra for storage and charging, but reporter Gurman points out that 'input devices like the Apple Pencil could leave noticeable scratches on the delicate screen (of the iPhone Ultra).'
Furthermore, it is widely known that Steve Jobs, one of Apple's co-founders and the company's legendary CEO, said ' nobody wants a stylus ' when announcing the first iPhone. Therefore, Gurman reports that this is merely a test, and it is unlikely that Apple will actually release an Apple Pencil for the iPhone Ultra, contrary to Jobs' statement.
With the iPhone Ultra announcement imminent, Apple will see CEO Tim Cook step down as CEO on September 1, 2026 (local time), becoming Chairman of the Board. John Turnus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, is expected to succeed Cook as CEO.

In the three years since Turnus became Apple's CEO, he has likely needed to replace senior executives in departments crucial to Apple's overall operations, including hardware, marketing, retail, and human resources, Gurman reported.
Specifically, it is expected that Deirdre O'Brien, Vice President of Retail and Human Resources, will step down in the next few years. Gurman reports that Vanessa Trygbu will likely succeed her in the retail division. At the time of writing, Trygbu is Vice President of All Retail Store Operations. The human resources department is expected to consider either an external candidate or an internal candidate like Cynthia Bowman to fill the void.
Johnny Slooge, the Chief Hardware Officer, is also expected to step down soon. Slooge is the driving force behind Apple's success with its proprietary Apple Silicon chips. He also oversaw the development of the 'C1,' Apple's first 5G modem chip.

Gurman points out that following Sluj's departure, Apple will once again split its hardware team into engineering and technology divisions. The reason, he says, is that Apple doesn't have anyone else who can fill Sluj's role. In this split organizational structure, he predicts that Tom Malyb, a hardware executive, will lead the engineering division, while either Sri Santanam or Zongjiang Chen will take over the technology division, including chip development.
Greg Joswiak, Vice President of Marketing, is also expected to step down in the next few years, with Lillian Rincon, who has been appointed head of AI marketing, and Kaian Drance, head of iPhone marketing, being mentioned as potential successors.
Luca Maestri, Vice President of Corporate Services, is also expected to step down soon. Gurman pointed out that the 'most logical scenario' is that this role will be taken over by Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh.
