Numerous lawsuits related to social media addiction are currently pending, alleging that social media platforms, with features such as infinite scrolling and autoplay, are causing addiction among children. According to the news site The Next Web, there are more than 10,000 individual lawsuits and more than 800 lawsuits filed by schools and school districts. Reuters reports that there are more than 3,300 cases in California state courts and more than 2,600 cases in California federal courts.

In a lawsuit filed by the Bressit County School District in Kentucky, Google (YouTube), ByteDance (TikTok), Snap (Snapchat), and Meta (Instagram) have all agreed to settle, paying a total of $27 million (approximately 4.4 billion yen).

Meanwhile, in a preliminary trial in March 2026 filed by a 20-year-old woman named KGM, Meta and Google were found to be responsible for her depression and anxiety, and were ordered to pay $3 million in compensatory damages and $3 million in punitive damages, totaling $6 million. Meta was assigned 70% of the cost, and Google 30%, with both companies indicating their intention to appeal. ByteDance and Snap had already reached a settlement prior to the trial.

The plaintiff in this case, RKC, a 15-year-old boy from Florida, has been using social media since he was 8 years old and has been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder. He has been seeing a therapist since 2023 due to symptoms including suicidal ideation .

However, following YouTube's settlement in June 2026, it has now been revealed that TikTok has also reached a settlement before the case went to court. According to plaintiff's attorney Emily Jeffcott, the settlement is in the final stages of negotiation.

This means the trial will proceed with Snap and Meta as defendants. Attorney Jeffcott says he plans to call some of the same witnesses who testified in KGM's trial. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel, who was scheduled to testify as a witness in KGM's trial, was removed from the witness list after the settlement, so his appearance in this trial would mark his first time testifying in court.

Furthermore, Judge Carolyn Cool, who presided over Mr. KGM's trial, will also preside over Mr. RKC's trial.
