Trump administration asks OpenAI to limit release of GPT-5.6
According to the news site The Information, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has informed employees that, in accordance with a request from the federal government, they will release GPT-5.6 in a 'limited preview format,' allowing access only to a small group of corporate customers. During this period, the government will approve customer access on a case-by-case basis, and the number of companies receiving access will be limited to around 20.
This appears to be a similar measure to the one taken by the US government to suspend distribution of Anthropic's 'Claude Fable 5' and 'Claude Mythos 5.'

According to the news site Axios, OpenAI had been actively in discussions with the government even before Anthropic was asked to stop providing Fable and Mythos.
In June 2026, President Trump signed an executive order directing several government agencies to establish mechanisms for AI companies to conduct voluntary testing before releasing new AI models.
Furthermore, CEO Altman reportedly intends to release GPT-5.6 within the next few weeks. On the other hand, it has been reported that the company is considering postponing its initial public offering (IPO) to 2027.
