Discord begins testing age verification using Google Wallet and credit cards.

In February 2026, Discord announced that it would be introducing an age verification feature worldwide, stating that it would use several methods to verify that users are not minors when accessing certain features. It has now been revealed that a method using Google Wallet and a credit card is being tested as one of the age verification methods.

Discord will apply a 'Minor-Friendly by Default' setting to all existing and new users, and will require age verification when accessing sensitive content or age-restricted channels.
There are several methods for age verification, but basically, it is done using age estimation technology that utilizes machine learning models. This analyzes activity patterns such as account duration, whether there are registered payment methods, and the types of servers participated in to estimate age, and it is said that this allows many adult users to access restriction features without taking additional steps.
If your age cannot be confirmed at the above stage, a more detailed age verification will be conducted. The methods previously suggested were 'taking a selfie video' and 'taking a photo of a government-issued identification document.'

The new method being implemented is age verification using either 'Google Wallet' or a 'credit card.'
In the case of Google Wallet, your age is verified using the ID and password stored in your Google Wallet. The ID and password is a digital identification document created from personal identification documents such as a passport. Google shares your date of birth with Discord, and Discord calculates your age based on that date of birth.
For credit card users, possessing a card in your own name serves as proof of adulthood. Card information is sent to 'k-ID,' an age verification service used by Discord for selfie videos, and k-ID then sends it to Stripe. A small charge may be made to verify the card's validity, but if charged, it will be fully refunded within 14 business days.
Discord announced that 'between June and July 2026, we are testing several new age verification methods, including Google Wallet and credit card verification, to provide more options for the small number of users who may need to manually verify their age.'
Discord's age verification system was implemented to comply with laws in the UK, Australia, and Brazil, and faced backlash from some users when it was announced for global rollout. Discord acknowledged the backlash, apologized for insufficient explanation, and postponed the global rollout until late 2026.
