Google begins testing machine learning to detect whether users are under 18

Google has announced that on February 12, 2025, it will test an age estimation model using machine learning to understand users' ages. This will enable it to predict whether users are over or under 18 years old and provide appropriate protections based on their age.

Google has a number of measures in place for all users under the age of 18, including SafeSearch filters , limiting sensitive ad content , restricting age-restricted content on YouTube and Google Play, and protecting against generative AI .
However, Google pointed out that 'As we continue to find new ways to provide age-appropriate protections, one of the most complex challenges is correctly understanding a user's age.' Therefore, Google announced that it will test a machine learning-based age estimation model starting in 2025. According to YouTube CEO Neil Mohan, Google's age estimation model will use existing data about users, such as the sites they visit, the types of videos they watch on YouTube, the categories of videos they watch, and how long their accounts have been created, to determine their age.
As an example, foreign media Engadget states that 'users who frequently search for information about mortgage lending or taxes, or who use accounts that were created more than 20 years ago, are likely over 18 years old.'
If Google detects that a user is under the age of 18, the company will notify them that it has changed some settings and provide them with instructions on how to verify their age using a selfie, credit card, or government-issued ID. Users who are determined to be under the age of 18 will also be given a more age-appropriate experience, including safe search filters and restrictions on age-restricted content.

These tests will be conducted in the United States in 2025. They are then planned to be rolled out globally in the future. A Google spokesperson said, 'We continue to explore further opportunities to provide greater transparency to users about account-level age estimation.'
Various companies are developing such tools that 'use AI to guess a user's age.' In November 2024, Meta reported that it was developing an age guessing tool called an 'adult classifier' that would scrutinize users' profiles and posts to detect underage users.
