Apple may be adding a feature to the iOS 27 beta that allows users to select Claude or Gemini with Siri, but it wasn't announced at WWDC.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that Apple has incorporated 'Extensions' into a test version of iOS 27 that will allow Siri to invoke generative AI other than OpenAI's ChatGPT, such as Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini.

Apple's 'Siri AI,' announced at WWDC 2026, is a feature that searches for information across messages, emails, photos, and other apps, and guides users through the process by understanding what is displayed on the screen, thus reducing the need to switch between apps. The generative AI that users want to use will vary depending on their purpose and contract status, but the ability to select and call external AI services other than ChatGPT from Siri was not announced.

Extensions replaces the previous system of individual contracts between AI companies, allowing compatible apps to integrate with Siri through a common mechanism. It provides an Extensions API, a common interface for communication between apps and the OS, and AI companies will need to obtain special usage rights from Apple to make their apps compatible.

According to reports, the beta version of iOS 27 will include a settings screen for selecting AI services to use, as well as a dedicated section in the App Store for finding compatible apps. Once compatible apps are installed, it is expected that users will be able to call external AI from Siri and its dedicated Siri app, as well as from apps like 'Writing Tools' to assist with writing and proofreading, and 'Image Playground' for image generation.

If implemented as reported, users will be able to choose from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and others depending on their needs. Instead of Siri answering all questions on its own, it will act as a gateway, routing requests to the AI service of the user's choice.

However, it has been reported that the agreement under which Google's Gemini supports part of Siri AI and the mechanism by which users call the Gemini app as an external service are separate, and that Extensions will not replace the Siri AI infrastructure itself. It has also been reported that the same privacy protections as those applied to existing ChatGPT integrations may not apply to integrations with third-party apps.

Apple has not explained why it did not announce Extensions at WWDC 2026. Reports suggest that possible factors include consistency with Apple's claims regarding the European Union's Digital Markets Act, contractual legal considerations that OpenAI is considering, and Apple's desire to draw attention to the updated Siri AI.

In addition to extensions, iOS 27 will reportedly include a feature that allows users to move control items such as flash, exposure, and timer to their preferred locations within the camera app. Furthermore, watchOS 27 is said to include a simplified version of the 'Modular Ultra' watch face.

Changes that appear to be intended for foldable iPhones and touch-enabled MacBooks have been found in the beta versions of iOS 27 and macOS 27. The iOS 27 code includes descriptions related to multiple screens and detection of the device's angle, while macOS 27 adds a pull-down refresh function and touch input via Sidecar. However, Apple has not officially confirmed the release of either product.

Apple has not yet announced when the Extensions will be available, but it has been reported that details may be revealed by September.
