Do GIGAZINE readers own a car? If so, what make it? We asked them in a survey.
Cars are a convenient mode of transportation for commuting, shopping, traveling, and taking children to and from school, but in urban areas, public transport and car-sharing services are often sufficient. GIGAZINE conducted
First, we asked, 'Do you own or rent a car?' The results were as follows: 50.1% answered 'No' and 49.9% answered 'Yes,' meaning that the number of people who do not own a car and those who own or rent a car were almost evenly split.
Looking at the results by age group, only 11.3% of teenagers answered 'yes,' and even among those in their 20s, the figure was only 33.9%. On the other hand, the percentage of people who own or rent a car increased with age: 45.3% for those in their 30s, 56.7% for those in their 40s, and 61.3% for those in their 50s, reaching 69.8% for those in their 60s and 68.9% for those in their 70s. The figure for those 80 and over is a reference value due to the small number of responses, but 40.0% answered 'yes.'
Next, for those who answered 'I own or rent a car' in the previous question, we asked 'Which car manufacturer's car is it?' with multiple selections allowed. The top choices were mainly domestic manufacturers, with 'Toyota' being the most popular at 26.0%, followed by 'Honda' at 17.4%, 'Suzuki' at 14.5%, 'Nissan' at 10.5%, 'Daihatsu' at 8.6%, 'Mazda' at 7.4%, 'Subaru' at 4.9%, and 'Mitsubishi' at 1.9%. Among the foreign manufacturers, 'BMW,' 'Volkswagen,' 'Mercedes-Benz,' 'Audi,' 'Fiat,' 'Volvo,' 'Renault,' 'Alfa Romeo,' 'Tesla,' 'Peugeot,' 'Citroën,' and 'Porsche' were mentioned.
Furthermore, those who answered 'Other' were asked to freely specify a car manufacturer, and the resulting word cloud is shown below. The most frequently mentioned names were 'Lexus' and 'Jeep,' with other names including 'Rover,' 'smart,' 'MINI,' 'Eunos,' 'Alfa Romeo,' 'Cadillac,' 'Maserati,' 'Lotus,' and 'BYD.' In addition to manufacturer names, some respondents in the free-response section also answered 'Unspecified because it's a car-sharing service.' This suggests that our readers include not only those who own cars, but also those who use rental cars or car-sharing services when needed.
GIGAZINE readers are roughly split evenly between those who own or rent cars and those who do not own cars at all. It was found that domestic manufacturers, led by Toyota, are the most popular.
