Anthropic's recruitment process is like this; the use of AI in interviews is strictly prohibited.

Anthropic, the developer of the AI 'Claude,' was founded by individuals who left OpenAI due to concerns that the company did not place sufficient emphasis on security. It is said that Anthropic places particular emphasis on AI security in its hiring process. Bloomberg has compiled details of this hiring process.

According to Bloomberg interviews with former Anthropic recruiters and HR staff, Anthropic offers a rigorous interview and skills assessment process with up to five stages. The use of AI is generally prohibited in these tasks, except where explicitly permitted.

One type of interview is called a 'culture interview.' According to those with experience in the hiring process, culture interviews ask about a candidate's values, worldview, and how seriously they take the threat posed by AI. Virtually all job candidates, whether research scientists, accountants, or payroll specialists, must pass this hurdle. A career coach at the interview preparation company Exponent says that for many people, it feels more like therapy than a job interview.

A former recruiter at Anthropic said of the culture interview, 'The interviewer can be selected from any department, and if the interviewer gives the candidate a low rating, the candidate is often not hired. This is because Anthropic's management views the company's mission as an issue that concerns the survival of humanity. I would advise candidates to take the interview seriously, even though it may feel strange.'

According to a former recruiter, the interview process starts with a lighthearted atmosphere and broad questions, then moves on to deeper questions such as ethical dilemmas in the workplace. Daniela Amodei, co-founder of Anthropic and sister of CEO Dario Amodei, said, 'Anthropic is looking for employees who can respectfully discuss with people who have different opinions, and we assess that ability in our culture interviews.'

Daniela Amodei continues, 'We ask questions like, 'What are some of the slightly unusual beliefs you hold, and how have you defended them in uncomfortable situations because you felt they were right?' We're not looking for a specific belief. What we're looking for is the ability to say, 'I felt this was right, and it may not have been a popular idea, but I really stuck to it.''

According to career coaches and former recruiters, another quality Anthropic seeks is 'intellectual independence.' This refers to being skeptical of the company and how it pursues its mission, and seeking original answers rather than commonplace ones.

Anthropic is one of the fastest-growing companies in history, and its valuation is expected to exceed $900 billion (approximately 143 trillion yen). Once its upcoming additional funding rounds are complete, Anthropic will surpass OpenAI to become the world's most valuable AI startup.

According to recruiters, many people are so eager to join Anthropic that they are willing to give up their positions, such as having a chief technology officer from a software company relinquish their role to work as 'part of the technical staff' at Anthropic. With annual salaries offering up to $850,000 (approximately 136 million yen) for key positions, joining the company is a life-changing decision.

Some candidates are paying a lot of money for interview preparation, with users who have been hired by OpenAI or Anthropic spending an average of about $4,600 (approximately 730,000 yen) on interview preparation.

According to an analysis published by venture capital firm SignalFire, Anthropic boasts the highest employee retention rate among its peers at 80% over two years. The report also points out that engineers are eight times more likely to move from OpenAI to Anthropic than the reverse, and approximately eleven times more likely to move from Google DeepMind to Anthropic.

Paul Smith, Anthropic's Chief Commercial Officer, stated, 'I'm looking for very unconventional talent.' CEO Dario Amodei said, 'Anthropic's challenge is to grow rapidly without diluting the commitment to the mission that has characterized our company.'
