I tried Nauru's 'Coconut Fish Rice,' a dish consisting of tuna sashimi, coconut milk, and rice with lime squeezed over it, at the Nauru Expo 2026 in Tokushima.

The largest entertainment event in Western Japan, 'Machi★Asobi vol.30,' which is held in Tokushima with the concept of 'making the most of the town,' is taking place on Saturday, May 16th and Sunday, May 17th, 2026. Coincidentally, ' Nauru Expo 2026 in Tokushima ' is also being held from Friday, May 1st to Sunday, May 31st, 2026. Since a Nauru food stall was

set up in front of the main venue, Urushi-gura Ichikawa, only on the 17th, during the Machi★Asobi period, I bought some food and tried it.

The location of Urushi Kura Ichikawa is here. It is located in Kagoyamachi Shopping Street, which is connected by an arcade to Higashishinmachi Shopping Street, one of the venues for Machi★Asobi.

It's right behind the tent where the 'Mahoutsukai no Yoru' stamp for the 'Anime Studio Stamp Rally' held at Machi★Asobi vol.30 was located.

I spent a whole day walking around Tokushima city and completed the Machi★Asobi vol.30 commemorative 'Anime Studio Stamp Rally' - GIGAZINE

A food stall has been set up in front of 'Urushi-gura Ichikawa'.

The stall is

Bonbons Bubble Waffle , located in front of Kamojima Station, and the menu consists of three items: 'Spam Fried Rice with Coconut Crusted Fish' (1500 yen), 'Coconut Fish Rice' (1500 yen), and 'Imaginary Doboe' (500 yen). The Nauru menu is said to be a limited-time item for that day only.

This is 'Spam Fried Rice with Coconut Crusted Fish'.

In short, it's a combination of Spam-infused fried rice and coconut-coated fish fry, making it substantial enough to serve as a complete lunch. The crispy coconut coating provides a nice contrast in texture.

Simply put, 'Coconut Fish Rice' is a bowl of rice topped with tuna sashimi marinated in coconut milk.

Since it's a flavor unfamiliar to Japanese people, I first tried dipping a small amount of rice into the sauce and found it to be very light and easy to eat. There was no sweetness.

So, I poured the rest over the rice. It's similar to how meat or fish is sometimes marinated in plain yogurt to remove the fishy smell; this was like tuna sashimi marinated in coconut milk. The refreshing acidity of the lime added to the dish, making it easy to eat, almost like ochazuke (rice with tea). If I had to find a similar dish, I can't think of anything in Japanese cuisine, but it might be similar to biryani served at Indian or Nepalese restaurants, served with raita (yogurt salad).

'Imaginary Doboe' is a baked confection inspired by Doboe, a local sweet from Nauru. It's a sweet, chewy, sponge-like treat that pairs well with coffee, tea, or other beverages.

The 'Mogumogu Day' at Nauru Expo 2026 in Tokushima will be held only on Sunday, May 17th, 2026. Also on the 17th, Nauru shops from other regions will be setting up shop at Kojika Kitchen in Aizumi Town.
