The Electronic Frontier Foundation announced its withdrawal from X, citing a decline in page views to less than 3% of what it was seven years ago.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a non-profit organization working to protect digital privacy and freedom of speech, has announced the closure of its official X (formerly Twitter) account, which it had been using for approximately 20 years.

According to the EFF's announcement, one of the reasons for the withdrawal was a decrease in page views (PVs).

Around 2018, they were posting 5 to 10 times a day and had 50 to 100 million monthly page views. However, by 2024, they were posting 2,500 times a day with only 2 million monthly page views, and by 2025, they had fallen to 1,500 posts with approximately 13 million annual page views (just over 1 million per month). In just seven years, their page views had dropped to less than 3% of their peak.

Another reason for withdrawing was the disregard for user rights.

Prior to Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter in October 2022, the EFF had specifically identified three areas that needed improvement.

Transparent content moderation : Publicizing and sharing policies, clarifying appeal procedures, and reaffirming commitment to the Santa Clara Principles, which outline content moderation standards.
True security improvements : Including full-fledged end-to-end encryption for DM.
- Enhanced user control : Providing means for users and third-party developers to control the user experience through filters and interoperability.

The EFF acknowledged Twitter as 'never a utopia, and a platform we've criticized since its inception, but commendable for sometimes fighting for user rights,' but added that since becoming X under Musk, 'they've fired their entire human rights team, laid off staff in countries where X once stood up against censorship demands from oppressive regimes, and lost users.' They then indicated their intention to withdraw from X, stating, 'Today, we've decided to join them.'

They also stated that they are not 'withdrawing from social media' and will continue to operate other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

On this point, the EFF stated that they exist to protect people's digital rights and that their work is necessary not only for those who already appreciate their efforts, but especially for those who are deeply entrenched in the 'enclosed garden' of mainstream platforms and under corporate surveillance. They explained that while social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok, like X, engage in inappropriate activities such as oppressing vulnerable groups and violating their privacy through targeted advertising, the reality is that people who need the EFF use Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok every day, making them hubs for community care. In fact, they noted that many posts critical of the platforms are read on Facebook and TikTok.

With this withdrawal from X, EFF's battlegrounds now include its official website, as well as Bluesky , Mastodon , LinkedIn , Instagram , TikTok , Facebook , and YouTube .
