Using Starlink Mini as a backup internet connection at home

Jack Pierce, an enthusiast, has shared his experience using the new, smaller '

Starlink Mini ' model from the Starlink satellite communication network service, stating that he uses it as a backup when his main line goes down.

The Starlink Mini is a compact, portable model that allows for unlimited low-speed (500kbps) data communication even when not in use, through its 'standby mode' for a monthly fee of 730 yen.

Mr. Pierce deployed this Starlink Mini as a backup and configured it to automatically switch over if the main line (fiber optic) went down.

The Starlink Mini itself costs £159 (approximately ¥34,000) in the UK, where Pierce lives. The standby cost is £4.50 per month (approximately ¥950), which Pierce describes as 'a reasonable price for a satellite internet backup, and considerably cheaper than a comparable 4G/5G backup.' Pierce also points out that a major advantage is that it can be used almost anywhere there is a clear view of the sky, meaning it is not dependent on mobile network coverage.

Mr. Pierce configured Starlink as a secondary WAN, allowing for easy switching of the connection in emergencies using the router's failover function. If the main connection goes down, it automatically switches to Starlink.

Mr. Pierce's main line is excellent, with a latency of 5ms at its best. On the other hand, Starlink's latency is an average of 26ms, but Mr. Pierce describes it as 'very good.' Advantages he cited include its low average power consumption of approximately 13W, the availability of 100Mbps/200Mbps/400Mbps plans for practical use, its extremely easy setup, and the user-friendly Starlink app for both monitoring and configuration.

Pierce stated, 'The fact that we have a backup system that relies on a constellation of satellites orbiting approximately 600 km above the Earth is genuinely interesting. A major advantage is its operation during power outages. My home has solar batteries so power is maintained during blackouts, but my fiber optic connection is dependent on local infrastructure and will stop working. Starlink, on the other hand, is independent, so communication will continue without interruption.'
