Meta receives patent for AI that can take over a dead person's account and continue posting and chatting

Meta has been granted a patent for an AI system that can simulate a user's activity on social media and post on their behalf. This model is said to be useful when a user does not use the social media for a long period of time.

The patented model is said to be able to mimic a user's behavior by reacting to content, updating posts, sending messages to other users, etc. According to the patent, the model could be used to simulate a user's absence, such as during an extended vacation or death.

By having these models act on behalf of users, it is believed that they can behave as if the users themselves are still active, thereby maintaining engagement.

The patent also mentions more advanced possibilities, such as using AI models to simulate user voice and even video calls.

The technology is thought to be designed with Meta's platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, in mind, but a Meta spokesperson said there are 'no plans to move forward with this technology,' adding that 'patents are often filed to protect ideas or concepts that may never be commercialized.'

The concept of AI replicas of deceased users has also come up in discussions of Meta's technology. In a 2023 interview with computer scientist Lex Friedman, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said there might be ways to help grieving people by tapping into their memories, but stressed that such a system should require the individual's consent, adding that 'the idea could be unhealthy.'

The idea of using AI to recreate a deceased person is not unique to Meta; various companies have already attempted similar things.
