Apple Announces Xcode Integration with Coding Agents Claude Agent and OpenAI Codex, Plus Support for MCP

Apple will release the release candidate (RC) version of Xcode 26.3 on February 4, 2026, and will implement ' agentic coding ,' which will provide stronger support for code-capable AI agents. This will enable coding agents, such as Anthropic's Claude Agent and OpenAI's Codex, to code autonomously directly within the IDE (integrated development environment).

At its annual developer conference, WWDC 2025, held in June 2025, Apple announced that it would support coding agents in Xcode 26. However, at this point, the support was limited to auxiliary functions such as creating code using extensions like ChatGPT and accessing documentation.

The newly announced 'agent coding' expands on previous enhancements, allowing Claude Agent and Codex to autonomously complete tasks. Developers simply provide natural language instructions, and the coding agent breaks down the tasks into smaller pieces, visually inspects the work using Xcode Previews, writes code, builds and tests it, and makes corrections. Developers can access the coding agent by signing in with their platform account or by entering an API key.

In addition to integration with Claude Agent and Codex, Xcode 26.3 also supports the open standard protocol MCP (Model Context Protocol) developed by Anthropic, allowing you to use AI agents and tools that support MCP in the IDE, in addition to Claude Agent and Codex.
'This connection brings together the power of AI agents with the native capabilities of Xcode to deliver the best results when developing for Apple platforms, giving developers the flexibility to work with the model that best suits their project,' Apple said.
“At Apple, our goal is to create tools that put industry-leading technology directly into the hands of developers, empowering them to build the best apps,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. “Agent Coding unlocks new levels of productivity and creativity, streamlining development workflows so developers can focus on innovation.”
