Parents can now set time limits on their children's YouTube Shorts viewing

The new restrictions feature will allow parents to set a limit on the amount of time their child spends scrolling through the YouTube Shorts feed, ranging from 15 minutes to two hours, with a 0-minute limit option coming soon.

YouTube is promoting its unique feature as being flexible enough to adapt to different household situations. For example, you can set the time to 0 minutes to prevent your child from watching YouTube Shorts when you want them to concentrate on homework, or limit it to 60 minutes to allow them to use it for entertainment during long car trips.
While there has been a feature to limit viewing time for YouTube Shorts in the past, the newly announced feature is tailored for accounts under the age of 18, and children cannot change or disable the restrictions set by their parents.
YouTube also said it will offer bedtime and rest reminders, which build on the well-being protections YouTube already enables for kids by default, but give parents additional controls to tailor their child's account to fit their household's needs.
Additionally, YouTube announced that it will introduce new principles and creator guidelines as a 'blueprint for high-quality teen content.' These principles were developed in collaboration with various universities and educational institutions, with the aim of guiding children to 'content that is not only fun but also age-appropriate, higher quality, and educational and inspiring.' YouTube stated that based on this framework, it will increase the frequency with which educational and high-quality videos appear in children's feeds.

'We're also working to make it easier for families to create and maintain YouTube settings that are age-appropriate for their children. Because minor accounts are subject to protections and age-appropriate recommendations, it's assumed that if it's unclear who in the family is watching or if they're watching with an age-inappropriate account, it can be a difficult experience.'
'We're going to enable parents to create new kid-friendly accounts and then switch between them in the mobile app with just a few taps, so everyone in the family can enjoy content and recommendations that are appropriate for their age. Parents will also be able to manually set age categories for kids and teens when creating an account, which will allow them to tailor the content they can access to those categories.'

'We grow alongside the families who choose to watch YouTube and are committed to ensuring it remains a safe and inspiring place to explore for the next generation,' YouTube said.
