According to GRU Space's roadmap, the company aims to launch its first lunar mission in 2029 using NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) to demonstrate the materials needed to build a hotel on the moon. The next mission will launch a larger payload, and a third mission, scheduled for 2032, will build the initial hotel, after which it will begin accepting guests. The hotel will be large enough to accommodate four guests at a time.
GRU Space is a startup founded by 22-year-old Skyler Chan, and is backed by investors such as SpaceX and defense tech company Anduril. Chan, who studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and worked as an intern at Tesla developing vehicle software, once dreamed of becoming an astronaut, but became convinced that 'making it possible for everyone to go to space, not just me, would be a more impactful life,' and so he began planning to build a lunar hotel.
The company's name, GRU, stands for 'Galactic Resource Utilization.' The long-term goal is to extract resources from the Moon, Mars, and the asteroid belt to fuel human spaceflight. The company also plans to conduct a demonstration test of technology to use lunar regolith as building material for hotels.

'SpaceX is building a spacecraft to take people to the moon, but if we're going to get to the moon, there has to be a destination worth staying on,' said Chang. 'We believe the fundamental problem we need to solve to get humans to the moon or Mars is building an extraterrestrial habitat. We need to build the roads, structures, and offices we live in today in space.'
NASA is already developing plans to achieve sustainable human habitation on the Moon, with plans to launch Artemis 2 as early as February 2026, followed by Artemis 3 in 2028, which will land astronauts on the Moon for the first time since the Apollo program. Through its new lunar exploration program, NASA aims to establish an Artemis Base Camp for astronauts to live and work on the Moon.
China has similar plans, aiming to land its first astronaut on the moon by 2030 and build a lunar base around 2035.

Reservations for the lunar hotel have already begun, with pre-applications currently being accepted for guest screening. The application fee is 165,730 yen at the time of writing. Selected applicants will receive an invitation in 2027. Guests will then be required to sign a refundable deposit of either $250,000 or $1 million (approximately 160 million yen). This deposit will be applied to the final price of the stay, which is expected to exceed $10 million (approximately 1.6 billion yen).
