The price of the Star Wars PS4 game has skyrocketed 20 times overnight after rumors surfaced that it could be the key to jailbreaking the PS5.

On January 1, 2026, it was reported that the BootROM key, a cryptographic key used to start up

the PlayStation 5 (PS5), had been leaked. Information has circulated that in order to jailbreak the PS5 using this BootROM key, a physical copy of the Star Wars game Star Wars: Racer Revenge , released for PS4, is required, causing prices to skyrocket on the used market.

When the PS5 is turned on, it checks the validity of the bootloader using the BootROM key built into the SoC. Since the BootROM key is burned into the APU, it is said that it cannot be modified by a firmware update.

PS5 security BootROM key leaked, Sony patch impossible - GIGAZINE

The PS5 has various other security measures in place, so the leaked BootROM key alone will not immediately enable jailbreaking of the PS5, but it may lead to a step forward in analyzing the PS5's boot system.

Jose Coixao, an engineer who analyzes game consoles, points out that 'a complete jailbreak is impossible without all the hardware, such as fuses and memory.'

However, the news that the PS5 BootROM key had been leaked caused quite a sensation. Gezine, a security researcher who also develops jailbreak tools, pointed out that the PS4 version of 'Star Wars: Racer Revenge' (code: CUSA-03474) contains a vulnerability that could allow arbitrary code execution on the PS5 console. He said that using this game and the BootROM key, it would be possible to jailbreak firmware version 12.

'Star Wars: Racer Revenge' is a game released for the PS2 in 2002. The PS4 port has only 9,500 copies in total distributed worldwide, with approximately 1,000 limited editions and approximately 8,500 regular editions, making it an extremely rare title. Therefore, the only way to obtain 'Star Wars: Racer Revenge' is to bid on an online auction site such as eBay or search through second-hand shops. Used copies were trading for around $20 (approximately 3,100 yen), but due to Gezine's point, at the time of writing, the price had already risen to nearly $400 (approximately 62,000 yen).

Gezine said that he has not yet released the jailbreak tool that uses 'Star Wars: Racer Revenge' to the public, and that he is working on improving the code. However, even if he were able to obtain 'Star Wars: Racer Revenge,' he said that it would be difficult to exploit the BD-JP exploit that enables jailbreaking using Blu-ray Disc Java , so it seems that a complete jailbreak is still a long way off.
