According to information obtained by The Wall Street Journal from people familiar with the matter, OpenAI and Oracle are planning to sign a $300 billion cloud contract over five years, a huge deal that far exceeds OpenAI's annual revenue, as the company continues to lose money.
The contract is scheduled to begin in 2027. The Wall Street Journal points out that this is a 'risky bet for both companies' because OpenAI's annual sales are less than $10 billion (approximately 1.5 trillion yen).

In June 2025, Oracle announced it had signed a cloud contract that projected annual revenues of more than $30 billion (approximately ¥4.4 trillion) beginning in 2027, but did not disclose the name of the contract. Meanwhile, OpenAI announced in July that it had partnered with Oracle to build a 4.5 gigawatt data center, but did not disclose the exact amount.

On August 31, Oracle's stock price soared by as much as 43% after it reported that its future contract revenue had increased by more than $317 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2025. As a result, Oracle founder and current chairman Larry Ellison's net worth reportedly reached $400 billion, making him the world's richest man, surpassing Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
