On March 16, 2025, Torvalds, who released Linux 6.14-rc7 (release candidate), said, 'Things seem to be pretty settled, so unless something extraordinary happens, we will be able to release the final version of 6.14 by the

end of next week.'

However, by the weekend of the 23rd, Linux 6.14 had not been released.

On the following day, the 24th, Torvalds released Linux 6.14 as if he had remembered, and apologized, saying that he had 'forgotten.'

Torvalds explained the reason for the delay:

'So it's early Monday morning (10:36am). I'm not a morning person so this is early. I wish I had some excuse as to why we didn't release 6.14 yesterday Sunday afternoon. I'd say something important came up last minute that delayed things. But no, it was just pure incompetence, because nothing last minute happened yesterday. I was just tidying up some unrelated stuff, and in the process, I completely forgot about the release.'

'Before you get angry and say that this is not what the developer of the most important operating system on the planet is saying, calm down. Torvalds has a decades-long track record of successfully leading the Linux kernel through hundreds of releases, and very few users are in urgent need of a new release. A one-day delay will not be a problem,' said The Register, a technology media outlet.

Linux 6.14 is focused on AMD's GPU updates, including support for Qualcomm's latest mobile chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, and a fix for the GhostWrite vulnerability in some RISC-V processors developed by Alibaba subsidiary T-Head Semiconductor.

'Judging by the pile of pending pull requests, 6.15 is going to be even busier,' Torvalds said.
