On March 4, 2025, Google announced two new features: 'Message Fraud Detection' and 'Call Fraud Detection.' The 'Message Fraud Detection' feature automatically sends a warning message to users that 'there is a possibility of fraud' when on-device AI detects patterns that appear to be fraudulent in SMS, MMS, and RCS messages. Based on the displayed warning, users can choose from two options: 'Not a scam' and 'Report & block.'

As part of the spam protection settings, Google Messages' fraud detection feature is turned on by default. In addition, the fraud detection feature only applies to chats with users other than those registered as contacts, and all message processing is done on the device, so privacy is protected. Even if you select 'Report and block,' only the details of the message recipient and recent messages with that person will be shared with Google and your mobile carrier.
To date, Google has added features to Google Messages to help prevent scams and spam, such as detecting package delivery scams and warning users about potentially dangerous links.

The scam detection feature in Google Messages will initially be available in the English language, including the US, UK, and Canada, and will be rolled out to other countries soon.
'Call Fraud Detection' uses on-device AI to analyze calls in real time and, if there is a possibility of fraud, such as a caller asking for payment with a gift card or prepaid card, alerts the user through audio notifications and haptic feedback (vibration) and displays, 'That call may be a scam.'
Google released a similar fraud detection feature for Google Pixel 6 and later devices in November 2024, but the feature released this time is said to be a more powerful fraud detection feature that utilizes the 'Gemini Nano' chip installed on Google Pixel 9 and later devices.

Like Google Messages fraud detection, call fraud detection does not record or store on your device or send any transcripts to Google or any third parties. It is off by default and when turned on, it will play beeps at the beginning and end of a call to let the other party know that fraud detection is on.
A Google survey (PDF file) revealed that many users who tried the beta version of the feature reported that they were more careful on their phone calls and that it helped them detect suspicious behavior and avoid becoming victims of conversational fraud.
The call fraud detection feature is only available on Pixel 9 and later devices living in the United States, and it is unclear when it will be available in Japan.
