Brigham and Women's Hospital, a major educational institution of Harvard Medical School, has launched the 'Apple Health Study' in collaboration with Apple to investigate how devices such as the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods can help improve physical health, mental health, and well-being. The Apple Health Study can be accessed through the Apple Research app provided by Apple, and will explore a variety of health issues, including 'the impact of mental health on heart rate' and 'the impact of sleep on exercise.'

'Existing research has only scratched the surface of how technology can improve our understanding of how it impacts human health,' said Callum McRae, M.D., a cardiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and principal investigator of the Apple Health Study. 'We are excited to be part of the Apple Health Study, which will continue to explore the connections between different domains of health using technology that many of us carry with us every day.'

Apple points out that medical research findings are often limited by the number of participants recruited, the amount of data that can be collected, and the specific study period. However, Apple explained that the Apple Research app allows for more flexible collection of these data, expanding the possibilities of medical research. The Apple Health Study is based on findings from previous large-scale studies,

the Apple Women's Health Study , the Apple Hearing Study , and the Apple Heart and Movement Study . These three studies have a total of more than 350,000 participants across the United States.

The Apple Health Study will use data collected from technology, including Apple and third-party devices, to understand how to predict, detect, monitor and manage changes in participants' health. Researchers will explore connections between different domains of health and will investigate a variety of areas including aging, cardiovascular health, circulatory health, cognition, hearing, menstruation, mental health, metabolic health, exercise, neurological health, respiratory health and sleep.

Apple Health Study allows you to participate in various surveys, and shows you how many questions you've answered and how long it's been since you participated in the survey.

Additionally, the Apple Research app allows you to turn research studies and the types of data you share on and off at any time.

'Since the launch of the Apple Research app, we've learned valuable insights that have enabled innovative new features for our users, like the Vitals app on Apple Watch and Walking Stability on iPhone,' said Sumbul Desai, Apple's vice president of Health. 'We're also delivering new capabilities in areas of health that have long been underrepresented, like menstrual cycle and hearing health . We're excited to advance the Apple Health Study with the Apple Research app, which will accelerate our understanding of health and technology for the whole human body - both physical and mental.'

At the time of writing, users who live in the United States, meet the minimum age requirement, and complete the informed consent process can register for the Apple Health Study via the Apple Research app.

The Apple Research app is also available in Japanese, but at the time of writing, the Apple Research app is not available on the Japanese App Store.
