There are concerns that the next Trump administration will abolish or reorganize federal science agencies, cut staff, and revise regulations aimed at protecting public health and the environment. In fact, Trump has promised to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, which promotes climate change measures, and the letter points out that 'the next Trump administration's agenda promises to revoke a range of protections that Americans rely on in their lives, including clean air and water, and safe food and medicine. The Trump administration may also revoke protections from extreme weather and other harmful effects of climate change.'

The Union of Concerned Scientists also said, 'Without strong, scientist-led federal science agencies, people will suffer and scientists will face additional burdens,' and called on Congress to 'vigorously oppose any policies proposed or implemented by Trump that would dismantle or reorganize science agencies.'

In addition, the Union of Concerned Scientists argued that they 'oppose any direct or indirect removal of federal agencies or their employees, including through severe budget restrictions, staff reorganizations, or sudden relocations of agency headquarters.' They also said they 'will uphold safeguards such as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act to protect the health and safety of people across the United States, especially those who are disproportionately burdened by environmental pollution.'

'The Trump Administration's first 100 days should include action on science and saving lives. Now is a critical time for members of Congress from both parties to come together and show the Administration that they will defend the science that will help protect the communities they represent,' the Union of Concerned Scientists said.

Also, on January 13, 2025, 28 organizations, including public health and medical associations and environmental groups, submitted

a letter (PDF file) to U.S. senators urging them to 'vote against Trump's policies that fail to recognize scientific consensus on issues related to scientific institutions.'

Meanwhile, Caroline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump transition team, said, 'Mr. Trump was re-elected with the overwhelming support of the American people who wanted to change the status quo in government. As president, he will continue to fight those who seek to derail his agenda.'
