We tried all the different varieties of Glico's luxury chocolate 'Tunmel', made only from cacao and sugar
Glico has released a chocolate series called ' Tunmel ' that brings out the unique characteristics of cacao grown in three countries: Peru, Dominica, and Ghana. Tunmel is made only with two ingredients, 'cacao nibs' and 'sugar,' and you can enjoy the pure taste of cacao. When Tunmel arrived at the GIGAZINE editorial department, we tried it to see the difference in taste between the three types of cacao.
Tunmel | A timeless, melting gemstone
Tunmel is available in three varieties: Tunmel Peru 81%, Tunmel Dominican Republic 82%, and Tunmel Ghana 83%. In addition, a Tunmel Cocoa Selection (Assorted Box) containing all three varieties is also available.
First, I'll try 'Tunmel Peru 81%'.
Although it's called chocolate, the only ingredients are Peruvian cocoa beans and sugar.
Each piece contains 23kcal.
When I opened the box, brown wrapping paper was revealed.
Remove the wrapping paper.
The contents look like this. There were eight chocolates wrapped in paper.
I removed the wrapper and placed it on a plate. It was a dark brown color, almost black, with a cacao-shaped logo engraved on the surface.
The only ingredients are cocoa beans and sugar, but the cocoa beans have a complex taste, with a 'bitter taste that disappears quickly' and a 'flower-like fragrant flavor' at the same time. The interesting thing about this product is that it has a flower-like scent even though it doesn't contain any flavorings. It's quite bitter, but not too bitter, so you can really taste the cocoa.
Next, I will try 'Tunmel Dominica 82%'.
The only ingredients are cocoa beans and sugar.
Each piece contains 29kcal.
Inside were six rectangular 'Tunmel Dominica 82%'.
The first one I tried, 'Tunmel Peru 81%', had the taste and aroma of cacao the moment I put it in my mouth, but 'Tunmel Dominica 82%' slowly melts and the rich taste of cacao gradually spreads. It doesn't have the complex taste of 'Tunmel Peru 81%', but rather a simple and sophisticated bitter chocolate.
Finally, I will try 'Tunmel Ghana 83%'.
The only ingredients are cocoa beans and sugar.
Each piece contains 29 kcal.
'Tunmel Ghana 83%' comes in a pack of 6.
'Tunmel Ghana 83%' has a very familiar taste, and in a word, it tastes like 'bitter chocolate with a high cocoa content'. The difference between this chocolate and the chocolate sold at supermarkets is that it has a uniform texture and is very smooth. Chocolate that is easy to obtain can be rough or easily broken depending on the individual piece, but 'Tunmel Ghana 83%' has a uniform and smooth texture no matter which one you eat.
There is also a 'Tunmel Cocoa Selection (Assorted Box)' which contains three types of cocoa: 'Tunmel Peru 81%', 'Tunmel Dominica 82%' and 'Tunmel Ghana 83%'. Let's open it.
On the back side, the ingredients and nutritional information of the three types of chocolate are listed.
Inside were four each of 'Tunmel Dominican Republic 82%', 'Tunmel Peru 81%', and 'Tunmel Ghana 83%'. Since the three types of Tunmel have quite different flavors, if you want to enjoy the differences in the origins of the cocoa beans, I recommend buying the 'Tunmel Cocoa Selection (Assorted Box)'.
'Tunmel Peru 81%', 'Tunmel Dominican Republic 82%' and 'Tunmel Ghana 83%' are all priced at 2,052 yen including tax, and 'Tunmel Cocoa Selection (Assorted Box)' is priced at 4,104 yen including tax. In addition to being available at the Hankyu Department Store Online Store and the Mitsukoshi Isetan Online Store , they will be sold in-store at the Hankyu Umeda Main Store for a limited time from January 15, 2025 to January 19, 2025, and at the Isetan Shinjuku Store for a limited time from February 8, 2025 to February 14, 2025.
