Interviews with the people involved reveal the methods used by Discord servers to drive others to suicide

A server called '764' that once existed on Discord was used to exchange child pornography and content recording self-harm, and there was also a case where a person who was instigated by a member of 764 committed suicide. The Washington Post, an overseas media outlet, attempted to interview the parents of the person who committed suicide and the members who instigated the suicide, and revealed the tactics of 764.

764 was a Discord server founded by Bradley Cadenhead, a teenager at the time, in which 'methods to threaten and drive minors into sending child pornography and violent content' were exchanged. Members practiced the techniques shared on the server, and a large amount of harmful content was uploaded to 764 as a result.

Threats by 764 have even gone as far as 'demands for suicide,' and there have been confirmed cases of people who have actually committed suicide after chatting with 764 members. Cadenhead was arrested in July 2021 and sentenced to 80 years in prison for possession of child pornography, and in November 2024, one of the members, Richard Densmore, was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The Washington Post was able to interview the mother of Samuel Harvey, who set himself on fire after chatting with a 764 member, and Fmlk, a former 764 member who drove Harvey to suicide. It has been revealed that Harvey had a conversation with Fmlk on a server he set up himself, and then live-streamed his self-immolation on a Discord server. It has also been confirmed that there is a video of several people laughing as they watched Harvey's self-immolation livestream.

According to the Washington Post, Harvey had excellent grades up until high school, but he dropped out of college due to mental illness and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in late 2020. After that, Harvey was discharged from the hospital in May 2021, and a few months later, he lost contact with his family and traveled to India for a pilgrimage to a Buddhist temple. However, he was stuck in Kyrgyzstan due to the COVID-19 quarantine and used up all his travel expenses. Harvey had been seeking support on social media, and on October 30, 2021, after sending a message to a social media acquaintance saying, 'I have decided to commit suicide,' he established a suicide preparation server on Discord called 'anhero tempest.' Incidentally, 'anhero' is a slang term for a person who wishes to commit suicide.

Several users participated in 'anhero tempest.' and messages were sent encouraging people to reconsider suicide. However, there were also users who encouraged suicide. One such user was Fmlk, a member of 764. At the time, Fmlk was 15 years old and enjoyed posting videos of people setting fire to dried grass near his house on 764 to get reactions. Having found Harvey's server where he was preparing to commit suicide, Fmlk thought that 'if I can drive Harvey to suicide, I can gain fame on 764,' and sent him a message encouraging suicide.

Fmlk continued to send Harvey messages such as 'You can do it!' on a daily basis. Then, on November 7, 2021, Harvey poured gasoline over his body and committed suicide by self-immolation. The suicide was live-streamed on 'anhero tempest.' and was watched by at least 29 users. Among the viewers were several 764 members, including Fmlk, who shouted 'I did it' and 'Long live 764' while watching the broadcast.

In addition, in March 2022, Fmlk found a girl who was discussing suicidal thoughts on a depression-related server, invited her to 'anhero tempest.' and talked her into committing suicide. As a result, the girl also died while live-streaming her suicide on 'anhero tempest.'

Fmlk testified that the reason he became involved in 764 activities was because of a 764 member named Kush. According to Fmlk, Kush was close to 764 founder Cadenhead and frequently sent love messages to Fmlk in the 764 chat channel. Fmlk called Kush his 'master' and sometimes sent sexual images of himself to Kush.

At the time of writing, Fmlk had severed ties with the 764 members, telling the Washington Post that '764 members are trash.' Fmlk also said, 'I was raised by Kush. Otherwise, I wouldn't have done that.'

Harvey's mother said she was unaware that Harvey's suicide was being live-streamed or that she was being pressured to commit suicide until she was shown the evidence by The Washington Post. 'I think this person was vulnerable in the sense that she was hurting others in order to belong to herself. I hope that she is in a healthier mental state now,' she said.
