Sanjo-in left behind a poem that beautifully conveys his feelings about his life, when things did not go as he had hoped. There are many points to praise about this poem, such as the sense of distance in time and the imagination that recalls the moment it was composed.
This is a famous poem that has been included in the Hyakunin Isshu.
I would be happy if you could check out how Masayo Koike translated it in this paperback edition. It's really good.

On last night's episode of 'To You, the Shining One,' the author of this book, Junko Yamamoto, presented a new theory that the 'Mochizuki' Michinaga wrote about did not refer to 'his own power,' but to these three empresses, and was applauded.
The Tale of Genji also contains a passage in which the Emperor is likened to the sun and the Empress to the moon.
In addition, the moon is also a reference to sake cups and banquets.
The early 20th century novel 'Kojo no Tsuki' by Doi Bansui also features a comparison between the moon and a sake cup, so it should have been a familiar expression to Japanese people, but for some reason the theory that it referred to 'power' has prevailed until recently.
