HarmonyOS NEXT, whose public beta version is now finally officially released, is based entirely on Huawei's proprietary Ark Engine, and does not include the Android AOSP core. It only supports native apps via the Ark Compiler and native APIs in the HarmonyOS SDK.

Huawei also explained that overall performance has been improved by 30%, battery life has been extended by 56 minutes, and there are significant savings in running memory.

According to Huawei, HarmonyOS NEXT uses a physical rendering engine to reflect real-world light, color, space, and time in the UI, providing a 'more immersive, colorful, and flexible experience.' The 'Mood Box' theme allows you to use emojis that change their facial expression depending on how hard you shake your phone.

The Huawei Share feature, similar to Apple's AirDrop, automatically recognizes HarmonyOS-equipped devices when they are brought close together and allows files to be sent and received wirelessly.

And like the conventional HarmonyOS, HarmonyOS NEXT is equipped with the voice assistant 'Xiaoyi', which can read the screen to assist with notes and writing, and answer questions in a conversational style. Huawei said, 'We will deeply integrate AI into the OS to realize Harmony Intelligence .'

In terms of security, the phone is equipped with Huawei's proprietary 'Star Shield Security' framework, which ensures the safety of the app ecosystem within the device. It also has a mechanism to block installed apps from accessing email, storage, call logs, etc., and from obtaining device information. In addition, the app store is equipped with a function to detect apps that do not meet security requirements, such as malware, and Huawei is promoting its high security.

'HarmonyOS has become the most viable digital base. To date, it has more than 110 million lines of code and more than 15,000 native apps. With Huawei's HarmonyOS running on a billion devices, the galaxy will be brighter, everything will be reborn, and now we will progress,' said Yu Chengdong, managing director of Huawei and chairman of the Consumer Business Group.

The public beta version of HarmonyOS NEXT can be experienced on the Huawei Pura 70 series, Huawei Pocket 2 series, and Huawei MatePad Pro 11-inch (2024 model), but at the time of writing, it is only available in China, and Huawei has stated that it has no plans to offer HarmonyOS NEXT outside of China.

In addition, in an interview in September 2024 , Chen Dong said, 'Huawei's PCs will eventually discontinue Windows and be equipped with its own proprietary HarmonyOS,' so HarmonyOS NEXT may be available for PCs in the future.
