MetroByte has released a movie that challenges the question, 'Is it possible to start Windows 95 on the New Nintendo 3DS and install the music production software Ableton Live to create music?'

MetraByte used ' dosbox-3ds ', a version of the MS-DOS emulator DOSBox developed for the Nintendo 3DS, to try to run Windows 95 on the Nintendo 3DS. The goal was to 'try making music on Windows 95 on the New Nintendo 3DS'.

The hardware used was the New Nintendo 3DS. Windows 95 is designed to run on 4MB of RAM, so it should work fine on the New Nintendo 3DS, which has 256MB of RAM.

Although I had some trouble due to the version difference, I was able to successfully start dosbox-3ds.

Mount the disk image and 1GB virtual storage, then boot into DOS on the D drive.

Next, install Windows 95 on the C drive.

The installation seems to take quite a while.

The Windows 95 setup screen appears.

MetraByte said that while he was setting it up, the battery was about to run out.

Enter the authentication key. According to MetraByte, the authentication key was 'legally obtained.'

However, when I registered my username, a 'system detection error' occurred.

The Windows 95 setup wizard crashed.

After tweaking the DOS settings, I resumed the installation, which took about 30 minutes before I was able to proceed.

After that, I tried the setup several times again, and finally got to the stage where the mouse cursor appeared and I was able to move it.

But then I got the message 'Setting up hardware and plug-and-play devices' even though I had no devices connected.

And then the blue screen. Even after rebooting, the registry error was still displayed, so MetraByte gave up on the work here.

Five days later, he tried setting up Windows 95 again, and this time the setup went ahead without any problems.

The Windows 95 desktop appears on the New Nintendo 3DS screen.

MetraByte was delighted when he started up Internet Explorer, but it was unstable and froze, forcing him to restart the browser.

After rebooting, the desktop background is successfully changed and MetraByte attempts to launch a 3D maze screensaver.

However, the error still appeared and Windows 95 was shut down.

The calculator works just fine.

Notepads are also OK.

MS Paint also launched successfully. I was able to draw, but the processing became quite heavy and a mysterious error sound rang out.

After that, MetraByte thought that these problems were caused by a lack of memory, so he increased the memory allocated to Windows 95 to 32MB and successfully installed the music production software Ableton Live.

It seems that I had a lot of trouble starting the software itself, so I purchased an update disc at an online auction site and finally managed to start Ableton Live.

However, when I tried to load and play a music file, the blue screen appeared again and Windows 95 crashed.

MetraByte commented, 'The New Nintendo 3DS can run Windows 95, but nothing else works well. It may be possible in the future, but it's not working right now.' IT news site Tom's Hardware said, 'The OS itself seems to work, so it may be able to run most lightweight software.'
