Kingma is a researcher of machine learning at the University of Amsterdam and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Google for several years. He was involved in basic research at OpenAI, which he founded in 2015, and was mainly involved in developing image generation AI generators such as DALL-E and large-scale language model technology.

In 2018, Kingma left OpenAI to work as an angel investor and advisor, and returned to Google in July of the same year. He is currently a research scientist at Google Brain (later Google DeepMind), Google's AI research division.

'Anthropic's approach to AI development resonates very well with my own beliefs, and I'm excited to contribute to Anthropic's mission to develop powerful AI systems responsibly. I can't wait to tackle the challenges ahead with my talented team, which includes former colleagues from OpenAI and Google,' Kingma said.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, who Kingma joined, was also formerly OpenAI's vice president of research. CEO Amodei parted ways with OpenAI due to differences in opinion over OpenAI's roadmap, particularly the expansion of commercial focus, and founded Anthropic with several former OpenAI employees, including Jack Clark, former head of policy at OpenAI.
