Following X (formerly Twitter), Meta blocks access to internal documents leaked from the Trump campaign on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads

The Donald Trump campaign, the Republican candidate for the 2024 US presidential election, was hacked, and documents investigating vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance were leaked. X (formerly Twitter) had blocked access to the leaked documents, but it has now been revealed that Meta, which operates Facebook and Instagram, has also taken similar measures.

In July 2024, documents prepared by the Donald Trump campaign to investigate Vance, the vice presidential candidate, were leaked on the Internet. The Trump campaign claims that it was an attack by Iran, but no evidence has been found. The documents were sent to multiple media outlets by an individual calling himself 'Robert,' but many media outlets refrained from publishing them because they may have been leaked through hacking and because they contain personal information.

However, a private journalist, Ken Klippenstein, published the document in question (the Vance Documents) on his website , citing that it was 'attracting great public interest during this election season.'

However, when Klippenstein promoted the Vance documents on his own X account, his account was suspended, with X's safety team explaining that the account was 'temporarily suspended for violating our rules regarding posting unredacted personal information about Senator Vance, including most of his address and Social Security number.'

Following X, Meta has also begun blocking access to the Vance documents published by Klippenstein on Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Meta has removed posts on Facebook, Instagram and Threads that contained URLs to the Vance documents.

Dave Arnold, a Meta spokesperson, told The Verge, 'Our policies do not allow content from hacked sources or content leaked as part of a foreign government's efforts to influence U.S. elections. Under our Community Standards, we block such content from being shared on our apps.'

It has been revealed that Threads not only blocks direct links to the Vance documents, but also links to the Vance documents published on Scribd and Google Drive. Below is a post containing a link to the Vance documents hosted on Scribd, but when you click on the link, you will see the message 'This link cannot be opened from Threads.'

Now that the Vance Documents URLs have been blocked, Threads users have been trying to get around the block in a variety of ways, including by using links from a Google search for Klippenstein's newsletter article, or by adding random spaces to the URL , or by replacing '.' with 'dot.'
