In a statement,

the Intelligence Community (IC) , which includes the FBI, said that Iran has for many years sought to exploit social tensions through cyber attacks, and added, 'We have observed increasingly aggressive Iranian activity during this election cycle, particularly influence operations targeting American citizens and cyber operations targeting the presidential campaign,' indicating that Iran's activities are particularly geared toward the presidential election.

Cyber attacks targeting the presidential election, including recent activity endangering Republican candidate Donald Trump's campaign, have also been attributed to Iran, the IC has determined.

The IC did not specify what kind of damage had occurred to the Trump campaign, but the Trump campaign announced on August 10, 2024 that 'some of our internal communications had been hacked,' and Microsoft also reported that 'Iranian hackers sent spear phishing emails to key figures in the presidential election in June,' and the IC's accusation is likely referring to this.

While no evidence linking the intrusion into the Trump campaign to Iran has yet been made public, and media outlets that allegedly had access to the leaked documents have remained silent, this statement is seen as the most authoritative claim to date linking the hacking of the election campaign to Iran.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Iran's UN mission denied the allegations, saying, 'As we have previously stated, Iran has no intention or motive to interfere in the US presidential elections. If the US government truly believes its claims are legitimate, it should provide us with appropriate evidence and we will respond accordingly.'
