After leaving Google in October 2021, Schazel founded Character.AI, a service that allows users to create and chat with AI avatars of themselves and other characters. Character.AI used to build its own AI models and train them to create AI avatars, but as Character.AI states, 'the situation has changed in the last few years,' and in recent years, ready-made, pre-trained AI models have become widely available.
'Given these changing circumstances, we believe it's important to leverage third-party large-scale language models in combination with our own large-scale language models, which will allow us to devote more resources to training models and creating new product experiences for our growing user base,' Character.AI said.
As part of this, Character.AI has signed an agreement to license its large-scale language model technology to Google. Character.AI said the deal 'gives us more capital to continue growing and focus on building personalized AI products for our users around the world.' 'This will allow us to further invest in post-training capabilities of our large-scale language models and give us the flexibility to use our own large-scale language models or third-party large-scale language models,' the company said.
As part of the deal, Character.AI's research team, including Schazel and de Freitas, will move to Google. Character.AI said most of its employees will remain with the company, and that its current legal officer, Dominic Perera, will serve as interim CEO.
Schazel, who is returning to Google after several years, will be part of Google's artificial intelligence subsidiary,
A Google spokesperson said, 'We are pleased that Dr. Schazel and his team, both outstanding machine learning researchers, will join the Google DeepMind research team.'
'We'd like to extend our sincere gratitude to David, De Freitas and the research team for bringing Character.AI to life, and look forward to building on their contributions to Character.AI,' Character.AI said. 'We're excited about the future of Character.AI and are committed to serving our users through the development of innovative new products.'
