The Attorney General of the State of Arkansas has filed a lawsuit against Temu , a Chinese online marketplace, alleging that the company collects and sells users' personal information.

Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin said Temu designed the app to have unlimited access to information on users' phones, including their camera, location, contacts and text messages, and that the company intentionally concealed that access.
Additionally, Attorney General Griffin alleges that Temu is selling the information it obtains to third parties for profits.
Attorney General Griffin sued Temu, alleging that this puts not only the information of those who install the app at risk, but also the information of others that those who install the app store, in violation of the state's Unfair Trade Practices Act and Privacy Act, and demanded that the company correct the problem.
In a statement, Attorney General Griffin said Temu 'contains malware and spyware capabilities' and poses security and privacy risks to the state of Arkansas and the United States.
This lawsuit is not the first time Arkansas has challenged Chinese business interests; in 2023, the state legislature passed a law regarding real estate ownership by foreign party-controlled corporations, ordering the sale of land in the state owned by Syngenta Seeds, a subsidiary of the Chinese company ChemChina.
Temu has been steadily expanding its reach in the United States, with 47 million monthly active users in the country alone.
