The photo below, taken by photographer Pete Souza, was mistakenly labeled with an AI-made label. Souza speculated that 'When you crop an image using Adobe Photoshop, you have to flatten the histogram before saving it as a JPEG. This process may have triggered Meta's labeling.'

'What's annoying is that Meta has been labelling me as 'AI-made' even though I unchecked the box when posting,' Souza said.

Others have reported similar content, with some arguing that the content should not be labeled simply because it was 'edited' using AI.

Image editing tools use so-called 'AI' in the broad sense to generate images and to erase objects from existing images. Meta has been reported to label when it uses generative AI for both generation and editing, and some photographers agree with Meta and argue that 'any use of AI tools should be fully disclosed.'

According to Meta, the AI-generated labels are created by referencing the photo's metadata, etc.

In response to an interview with tech media TechCrunch, a Meta spokesperson said, 'Our goal is to help people distinguish between AI-generated content. We've taken recent feedback into account and are continuing to evaluate our approach so that our labels reflect the amount of AI used in an image.'
