Microsoft Announces Discontinuation of General Availability of Copilot Pro's 'GPT Builder' Just Three Months After Launch

In March 2024, Microsoft began offering the 'GPT Builder' service, which allows users to customize the AI chat function 'Copilot GPT' built into Copilot, to Copilot Pro users. However, on June 10, just three months after its release, Microsoft announced that it would discontinue the provision of GPT Builder for personal use.

Microsoft's GPT Builder is a feature available to those who subscribe to the paid subscription service Copilot Pro, and allows users to create and share their own customized Copilot GPTs. A specific use case is to send a recipe plan to the shopping Copilot GPT to create a shopping list.

Windows Latest, a news site that handles Microsoft-related information, reported on June 10, 2024 that Microsoft is sending emails to Copilot Pro users informing them of the discontinuation of GPT Builder.

In a statement, Microsoft said, 'After July 10, you will no longer be able to create Copilot GPTs in Copilot Pro, and any Copilot GPTs you create will no longer be accessible.'

Users who have created Copilot GPT will have the option to save their custom instructions, but if they do not, they will be deleted on July 10. Also, saving instructions will not give you access to your custom Copilot GPT.

However, Microsoft hasn't completely phased out GPT Builder and will continue to offer it to enterprise users.

Regarding the reason for discontinuing GPT Builder for general Copilot Pro users and focusing on enterprise support, Microsoft explained, 'As we evaluate our strategy for Copilot's extensibility for consumers, we have decided to prioritize the core product experience while remaining committed to providing opportunities for developers. Based on this, we are shifting our focus for GPT to commercial and enterprise scenarios and discontinuing our efforts on GPT for consumers.'

The 'core product' Microsoft is referring to appears to be a reference to additional features in Copilot Pro, centered around Copilot's integration with office suites like Word and Excel.

Copilot Pro subscribers will still be able to use Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps and use AI image generation and editing after July 10, but 'the sudden removal of the AI customization features makes this paid subscription less appealing,' Windows Latest said.
