Following the introduction of '4G (fourth generation mobile communication system)' in 2006, the introduction of '5G (fifth generation mobile communication system)' has been progressing since around 2018. Mobile communication systems evolve and develop significantly approximately every 10 years, and efforts are underway to formulate specifications for ' 6G ', the next generation standard after 5G. 5G itself is also continuing to evolve towards the coming 6G era, and with functional expansion and performance improvements, the new specification has been defined as ' 5G-Advanced '.

For a long time, voice calls have been compressed into a single channel, and sound has come from a single direction. However, 5G-Advanced introduces a codec for low-latency 'Immersive Voice and Audio Services (IVAS)' to provide a spatially expanding voice experience.

Nokia demonstrated a video call using this IVAS technology. CEO Lundmark said, 'We have demonstrated the future of voice calling. This groundbreaking audio technology puts you in the other person's environment, spatializing the listening experience for voice and video calls and significantly improving it, bringing great benefits to enterprise and industrial applications.'

Ambassador Lindstrom, who spoke with CEO Lundmark, also said, 'The immersive voice and audio experience enabled by IVAS will improve the richness and quality of phone calls, and three-dimensional audio will make interactions more realistic and engaging, bringing many new benefits to personal and professional communications. Immersive communications technology will take cross-reality and metaverse interaction to the next level.'

Jenny Lecandale , president of Nokia Technologies, added: 'I'm proud that Nokia's researchers and engineers have played a leading role in developing groundbreaking immersive speech and audio technologies. Standardization will ensure that the whole world can benefit from this innovation.'
