The AI Summit is a summit attended by major AI development companies around the world, with the first one to be held in Bletchley, UK in November 2023. The second one will be co-hosted by the UK and South Korea and held in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, on May 21 and 22, 2024.
At the summit, an agreement was reached to 'develop safe AI,' meaning not to develop or deploy AI models if it is believed that risks cannot be sufficiently mitigated, and to ensure accountable governance and transparency regarding the safety of 'frontier AI,' which refers to cutting-edge AI.
The following 16 companies have agreed:
・Amazon
・Anthropic
・Cohere
・Google/Google DeepMind
・G42
IBM
・Inflection AI
・Meta
Microsoft
・Mistral AI
・Naver
・OpenAI
・Samsung Electronics
・Technology Innovation Institute
・xAI
・Zhipu.ai
The definition of the risk threshold indicated in the 'cases where sufficient risk mitigation is not possible' is scheduled to be announced at the AI Action Summit to be held in France in early 2025, after incorporating input from stakeholders, including governments.
Commenting on the agreement, UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak said:
'This is the first time in the world that so many leading AI companies from different regions have agreed to AI safety initiatives. These initiatives ensure that the world's leading AI companies provide transparency and accountability for their plans to develop safe AI. This sets a precedent for a global standard on AI safety, unlocking the benefits of this transformative technology.'
Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology, Michelle Donnellan, said:
'AI's true potential will only be unlocked if we understand the risks. Ensuring AI is developed safely is our collective responsibility and this agreement means stronger efforts by AI companies make the world a better place. The UK is a world leader on AI safety and I continue to leverage the power of the Bletchley Declaration (which agreed to the safe and responsible development of frontier AI at the first Summit) to place AI safety on the global agenda and inspire others. As stronger models emerge and more safety testing takes place around the world, we can manage AI's risks and seize its potential for innovation for economic growth.'
