When the M4-equipped iPad Pro was disassembled, it became clear that battery replacement was easier than ever before

At Apple's

live event held on May 7, 2024, the 'thinnest iPad Pro ever with M4 ' was announced. When gadget repairer iFixit disassembled this new iPad Pro, which was also reviewed by GIGAZINE , it became clear that the design had been changed to make it easier to replace the battery than before.

The battery capacity of the new 13-inch iPad Pro has been slightly reduced from 40.33Wh in the previous model to 38.99Wh. However, due to the high power efficiency and high heat dissipation performance of the M4 chip installed in the new iPad Pro, it seems that the new iPad Pro has achieved the same battery life as the previous model.

Batteries in mobile devices are consumables, so they will inevitably need to be replaced over time. Shahram Mokhtari of iFixit, who disassembled the new iPad Pro, said that the M4-equipped iPad Pro 'has the potential to save hours of repair time,' and noted that changes have been made to the internal design to make it easier to replace the battery.

To disassemble the M4-equipped iPad Pro, you first need to heat the body to melt the adhesive that secures the case and the tandem OLED screen. Once the tandem OLED screen is removed, the battery can be replaced immediately, so Mokhtari said, 'The fact that you can remove the battery without having to remove all the major components in the device is still a big advantage in terms of repairability. It's a big improvement over the previous generation.' In addition, the previous generation iPad Pro has a structure that makes it impossible to replace the battery without removing all the major components.

The phone has been praised for its battery replacement, as the battery can be replaced while many components, including the logic board, remain attached to the case. However, there are also some drawbacks to being the 'thinnest in Apple's history,' such as the speaker being damaged by the adhesive when removing it, and the daughterboard easily bending.

In addition, the 256GB model of the M4-equipped iPad Pro is equipped with only one NAND flash memory. Therefore, it has been pointed out that the data transfer speed is slower than other models with larger storage capacity (models equipped with multiple NAND flash memory), such as the 256GB model of the M2-equipped MacBook Air.
