China, which has been subject to US-led economic sanctions since around 2019, is lagging behind other countries in semiconductor manufacturing technology. In particular, imports of equipment for making high-precision semiconductors have been halted, meaning that many semiconductors are still stuck at the performance of older generations. However, it has been reported that China is looking tomake profits by mass-producing these older generation semiconductors, or to create high-precision semiconductors on its own.

Perhaps due to the success of older generation semiconductor production, China's largest foundry, SMIC, has made huge profits and become the world's second largest semiconductor foundry.
According to SMIC's financial results report, the company's revenue for the first quarter of 2024 (January to March) was $1.7502 billion (approximately 273 billion yen), up 4.3% from the previous quarter, and gross profit reached $239.7 million (approximately 37 billion yen).

According to technology media Tom's Hardware, TSMC had the highest revenue in the world for the quarter, with $18.87 billion (approximately 2.94 trillion yen). Looking at revenue alone, Intel and Samsung's in-house foundries are in second and third place, but as a 'pure play foundry' that manufactures semiconductors for other companies' brands, SMIC is the second largest in the world after Taiwan's TSMC.
SMIC's revenue increase is attributed to increased orders and production of older generation 7nm class semiconductors. SMIC said it expects first quarter semiconductor shipments to be 1.79 million units, and second quarter revenue to increase 5% to 7% year-on-year due to continued demand for pullbacks.
