At the AI developer conference 'Create 2024' held in Shenzhen, China on April 16, 2024, Baidu CEO Li Yanhong reported, 'The race to commercialize AI is intensifying in China. Meanwhile, Baidu's chat AI 'Ernie Bot' has attracted more than 200 million users.' Li also said, 'Ernie Bot was released in March 2023 and made available to the public on August 30. Just 13 months after its release, the number of companies and clients using Ernie Bot has reached 85,000.'
'Compared to directly using open source models provided by competitors, small AI models derived from Biadu's large-scale language model (LLM) 'Ernie 4.0' can perform significantly better at the same size. In addition, the operating costs will be significantly lower if the performance is the same, so open source models will fall further behind,' Li said.

At the conference, Li also announced three tools based on Ernie 4.0. According to Li, Baidu plans to release an AI agent development tool called AgentBuilder, an AI native application development tool called AppBuilder, and a customization tool for various AI models called ModelBuilder. By using these tools, users can create their own AI-powered chatbots and integrate them with Baidu's web search, or create applications without any coding knowledge.
'LLM itself does not create direct value, and only the AI apps developed using LLM can meet real market demand,' said Li.
According to Baidu, more than 200 types of LLMs are competing for market share in China, with Baidu playing a leading role among them. In fact, Baidu reported in December 2023 that approximately 26,000 companies have access to Ernie's functions and that Ernie processes more than 50 million requests every day.
Baidu also announced that it will hold an AI development competition and offer prizes of up to $7 million (approximately 1 billion yen).
