China releases new domestic next-generation CPU 'Loongson 3A6000', is it comparable to Intel's Core i5-14600K?

Loongson, a Chinese semiconductor company, announced the next generation CPU ' 3A6000 ' on November 28, 2023. Loongson commented, ``The 3A6000 is a CPU that rivals the world's mainstream products, and will be an opportunity for China to make a new breakthrough in domestic CPU design.''

Loongson's 3A6000 uses the 4th generation LoongArch instruction set architecture (ISA), has a 4-core, 8-thread design using a 12 nm manufacturing process, and has an operating frequency of 2.5 GHz.

The bar graph below is the CPU benchmark suite SPEC CPU 2006 , and is the result of comparing the single core performance of integer arithmetic (red) and floating point arithmetic (yellow) between 3A6000, previous generation 3A5000, and Intel's Core i3-10100. The peak frequency of the 3A6000 is 2.5GHz, while the Core i3-10100 is 4.5GHz, but the scores are almost the same.

Below are the results of comparing multi-core performance using the same benchmark as above.

Comparing the single core performance of Intel Core i3-10100 and Core i5-14600K at the same operating frequency of 2.5GHz as 3A6000, the 3A6000 achieved the best results in integer arithmetic, and the 14th generation also achieved floating point arithmetic. The result is on par with Core i5.

'This announcement shows that domestic CPUs have reached new heights in self-sufficiency and performance,' said Shi Huikang, an official at the Chinese Ministry of Industry. We showed what we can do.”

The U.S. Department of Commerce has revised its export control regulations and placed Loongson on the Entity List of foreign companies with which U.S. companies cannot do business. As a result, Loongson cannot purchase or license American technology, even indirectly. In short, we cannot use American-made products, including the design, ISA, and machinery necessary for manufacturing.

Unable to use American-derived technology and machinery, Loongson must design its own CPUs based on its own architecture and produce them on its own lines. The release of the 3A6000 shows that Chinese companies are gaining the ability to compete with foreign semiconductor manufacturers like Intel and AMD despite significant restrictions.

Loongson has announced that a motherboard that can install 3A6000 and supports DDR4 will be released from ASUS, and it is appealing that it not only manufactures its own but also maintains an ecosystem centered on 3A6000 only in China. .
