iPhone 15 Pro Max photo & benchmark review, A17 Pro chip adopted & finally what is the potential of the top iPhone model equipped with USB-C?



The iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max , which was released on September 22, 2023, is the first iPhone to use a USB-C connector, and is also equipped with the A17 Pro chip, which improves performance compared to the previous generation. The pre-ordered iPhone 15 Pro Max finally arrived at the GIGAZINE editorial department, so I first checked its appearance and performance.

The package looks like this. The iPhone 15 Pro Max I purchased this time is a 256GB model made of natural titanium.

Under the main body was a USB-C cable, an Apple logo sticker, a user guide, and a pin to open the SIM tray.



Let's take a closer look at the main body. The iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max uses titanium for its exterior, which has a high strength-to-weight ratio. The ``Natural Titanium'' I chose this time is a color that makes use of the metallic hue of titanium, and is a slightly dull gray.



The actual weight of the main unit was 220g.



The display is a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display. It has an all-screen OLED display with a resolution of 2796 x 1290 pixels.



The back looks like this. The size is 159.9mm in height x 76.7mm in width.



There are three types of cameras on the back: a wide-angle main camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera, and a telephoto camera, with a True Tone flash on the top right and a LiDAR scanner on the bottom right.



There are side buttons and an antenna line on the right side facing the display. Thickness is 8.25mm



The sides have a metallic texture, and the surface is treated to be matte to prevent reflections. It may look a little dark when you touch it with your finger, but it will easily disappear if you wipe it off with a cloth.



On the left side facing the display are the antenna line, SIM tray, volume up/down buttons, and action button.



The iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max has an action button instead of a volume on/off switch. By long-pressing this action button, you can turn the volume on and off, launch apps with shortcuts, and launch the camera app. However, since only one shortcut can be assigned to an action button, you don't really feel that it expands your range when using it.



Antenna line, USB-C port and speaker grill on the bottom. The A17 Pro chip installed in the iPhone 15 Pro Max is equipped with a USB controller, and unlike the iPhone 15, it is said to enable data transfer of up to 10Gbps, which is equivalent to USB 3.1 Gen2.

I compared it with the previous generation model,

The sides of the iPhone 14 Pro Max have a mirror finish, so fingerprints will be noticeable if you hold it with your bare hands. On the other hand, the sides of the iPhone 15 Pro Max are matte, so although they may look a little dark, fingerprints were not particularly noticeable.



iPhone 15 Pro Max (top) has a USB-C connector, iPhone 14 Pro Max (bottom) has a Lightning connector. The width of the connector itself remains almost the same, and the number and location of the speaker grilles and antenna lines remain the same.



I tried turning on the display.



According to Apple, the iPhone 15 Pro Max has been made lighter by using titanium, and the display bezel has become narrower. When we actually measured it, we found that the iPhone 15 Pro Max was about 1.5mm, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max was about 2.5mm, and it was confirmed that the bezel was indeed narrower.

This time, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max charged to 100%, we measured the performance using the benchmark app in an indoor environment with a room temperature of 24.9 degrees and humidity of 28 degrees. In addition, all subsequent images are the results of iPhone 15 Pro Max on the left and iPhone 14 Pro Max on the right.



First, I tried running

the GeekBench 6 CPU benchmark. The iPhone 15 Pro Max had a single-core score of 2900 and a multi-core score of 7200. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Pro Max had a single-core score of 2633 and a multi-core score of 6792. The iPhone 15 Pro Max has a higher score than the iPhone 14 Pro Max in both single-core and multi-core.

As a result of running the Geekbench 6 GPU benchmark, the iPhone 15 Pro Max had a score of 27275, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max had a score of 22870, which was higher than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The A17 Pro chip installed in the iPhone 15 Pro Max was shown to be more advanced in both CPU and GPU than the A16 Bionic chip installed in the iPhone 14 Pro Max.



The performance details of the GPU benchmark are as follows.



This time, I compared it using 3DMark , a benchmark application that measures 3D performance. Below are the results of 3DMark's real-time ray tracing benchmark ' Solar Bay '. Average frame rate was higher for iPhone 15 Pro max in all three sections. The overall score was 6466 for iPhone 15 Pro Max and 3994 for iPhone 14 Pro Max.



Below are the results measured by `

`Wild Life Extreme '', which measures GPU performance using Metal , an iOS computer graphics API. The overall score was 3467 for iPhone 15 Pro Max and 2450 for iPhone 14 Pro Max. The average frame rate was 20.8FPS for iPhone 15 Pro Max and 14.7FPS for iPhone 14 Pro Max.



The GPU performance of the A17 Pro has improved compared to the A16 Bionic, and it seems that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be able to play games that require high graphic performance more smoothly. In fact, Apple has announced that it will release AAA-level titles such as 'Resident Evil Village' and 'Resident Evil RE4' for the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max, showing confidence in the performance of the A17 Pro.
