I tried playing 'Darius Cosmic Revelation,' which adds new elements to two 3D titles from the 'Darius' series, a monumental side-scrolling STG.

We tried out 'Darius Cosmic Revelation,' which combines ' G Darius HD ,' a faithful high-definition (HD) port of the fourth game in Taito's popular side-scrolling shooter 'Darius' series, and ' Darius Burst Another Chronicle EX+ ,' a home console port of ' Darius Burst Another Chronicle, ' released in 2010, with new elements added.

'G Darius HD' and 'Darius Burst Another Chronicle EX+' are also available as individual downloads. When I loaded the 'Darius Cosmic Revelation' disc, 'G Darius HD' and 'Darius Burst Another Chronicle EX+' were installed separately.

◆G Darius HD
In G Darius HD, you can play five variations of G Darius. First up is 'G Darius', a complete port of the 1997 arcade version.

'G Darius' has been remastered in high resolution to create 'G Darius HD.'

'G Darius Ver.2' is a minor change version that was released about a year after the launch of 'G Darius', and includes major changes such as the addition of a beginner mode, major adjustments to the game balance, and faster game speed.

'G Darius HD Ver.2' is a high-definition remaster of 'G Darius Ver.2'.

Also included is 'G Darius (CS version),' a port of the home version of 'G Darius' that was ported to the PlayStation in 1998. The CS version is close to the arcade version, but it has a lot of sluggishness and the BGM cuts off midway because the game speed changes.

So, first I played the arcade version of 'G Darius'. The actual game screen itself has an aspect ratio of 4:3, and the entire screen displayed on the monitor is 16:9. Therefore, the margins on the left and right are used to display various information during the game.

Below is a movie of actually playing 'G Darius'. G Darius is a side-scrolling shooter, but it is characterized by the fact that it is the first in the 'Darius' series to use full polygon graphics.

In the 'Darius' series, you can get items by defeating colored enemies, and the key is to gradually power up your ship. This power-up system is also used in G Darius. Red enemies appear on the screen.

Defeating this enemy will reveal a red capsule, which will increase the power of your shots by one level.

The current power-up level is displayed in the gauge in the upper left.

And the main feature of G Darius is 'capture'. In the previous game, 'Darius Gaiden', you could turn some enemies into allies, but in this game, you can turn all enemies, including the small ones, into allies. To capture an enemy, you need to hit them with a capture ball, but the number of capture balls is limited. Purple capsule items increase the number of remaining capture balls.

Try using the capture ball to hit the mid-boss that appears in the middle of the stage.

The mid-boss will then stick to your ship and attack alongside you.

This mini-boss fires guided missiles, improving your ability to deal with enemies coming from all sides.

If you press the capture button and release the captured enemy, you can use it as a bomb. Your ship will be invincible while the explosion effect is active, so it's important to use it wisely.

You can also fire an alpha beam by holding down the shot button and then releasing it. It can wipe out most enemies, and can also erase enemy bullets over a wide area, making it a weapon that is nearly invincible in front of you. However, be careful because both bombs and alpha beams will erase captured enemies when fired.

And so we reach the boss. The familiar 'WARNING!' message from the Darius series appears.

Like the previous Darius Gaiden game, this one has a single 4:3 screen, but the graphics make full use of full polygons, and the appearance of the bosses makes quite an impact.

Even beginners can easily defeat the game by making full use of the capture system.

'G Darius' uses the route branching system familiar from the 'Darius' series, and although there are five stages to play, there are a total of 15 stages. In addition, each stage can branch into two, so the combinations are countless. It has high replay value, and you can create your favorite route and play it for a long time.

'G Darius HD' is a high-resolution remaster of the graphics of 'G Darius', but the content is the same. You can see what the screen will look like in high resolution by watching the movie below.

Below is the same screen with G Darius and G Darius HD side by side. By moving the slider in the center left and right, you can see how much the image quality has improved with G Darius HD.

Various settings can be made in 'OPTION SETTEING'. 'GAME CONFIG' looks like this.

'SCREEN' allows you to select the display method, size, and wallpaper type of the game screen.

'GADGET' allows you to set the gadgets displayed on the left and right.

'SOUND' allows you to reproduce body sonic effects. 'G Darius' was basically run on a regular arcade cabinet, but the arcade cabinet called Teatro 50EX realized 'body sonic,' which enhances sound through vibration. One of the features of 'G Darius HD' is that you can experience this body sonic effect through the vibration of the controller.

You can see your achievements in 'ACHIEVEMENT'.

In addition, 'RANKING' displays the score rankings compiled online.

You can view replays of players from the rankings. You can check not only their gameplay but also the timing of their inputs.

The 'Darius' series, including 'G Darius', has a proper story and world view, but it is not often mentioned when playing the game. 'G Darius (CS version)' is a home version port based on the PlayStation version, and is characterized by the fact that it also has an opening movie, which reveals the appearance of the pilot who will be riding the player's ship.

It's basically the same as the arcade version, but there are more scenes where the processing slows down than in the arcade version, so you may get the feeling that it's a bit sluggish when playing.

◆ Darius Burst Another Chronicle EX+
'Darius Burst Another Chronicle EX+' is a home console port of '

Darius Burst Another Chronicle EX, ' which has been available in arcades since 2010. As the '+' in the title suggests, it's not just a direct port of the arcade version, but also includes additional features.

In fact, 'Darius Burst Another Chronicle EX' already has a home port version called 'Darius Burst Chronicle Saviors' that features a completely new 'CS mode.' 'Darius Burst Another Chronicle EX+' does not have this CS mode, and is basically based on the arcade version.

The biggest difference between 'Darius Burst Chronicle Saviors' is the addition of an 'Event Mode' in which you can play events that were only available for a limited time in the arcade version.

Here are the events you can play:

In addition, the Murakumo Silver Hawk Burst, which was previously selectable in CS mode, has been added to the variations of your aircraft.

The following movie shows me playing the original mode of 'Darius Burst Another Chronicle EX +' using Murakumo Silver Hawk Burst.

Since it is a port of the arcade version, the dual 32:9 screen remains the same.

The main feature of 'Darius Burst' is the burst. It can fire a thick beam to wipe out enemies.

Bosses will also fire bursts, but if you time your burst with the enemy's, you can fire a 'counter burst' that will nullify the enemy's burst while dealing massive damage.

Additionally, while the Murakumo Silver Hawk Burst does not have the ability to 'burst install' the burst launcher in any desired location, it can instead deploy the four support units around the player's ship in three different patterns.

Darius Cosmic Revelation is available in PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions, with the regular version costing 6,800 yen including tax. Both are available for purchase on Amazon.co.jp, and at the time of writing, the PlayStation 4 version can be ordered for 5,165 yen including tax, and the Nintendo Switch version can be ordered for 5,973 yen including tax.
