It turned out that the trademark right of Twitter ``X'' was also owned by Microsoft and Meta

On July 24, 2023, Twitter's service name was changed to 'X', the same as Twitter's parent company owned by Elon Musk. However, the news site The Meesenger points out that Microsoft and Meta already own trademark rights for 'X' and may develop into legal disputes in the future.

Twitter's new company and brand name 'X' is not just a capital letter X, but a kind of blackboard bold letter '????' used in mathematics. There was also a suspicion that the logo design may have diverted ???? from Monotype 's Special Alphabets 4 , but Monotype staff themselves deny this suspicion.

News site The Messenger says the biggest obstacle to Twitter's rebranding is that both Microsoft and Meta own trademark rights using the single letter 'X'.

The 'X' filed by Microsot was registered on March 4, 2003 and was renewed on March 18, 2023.

In its trademark application, Microsoft defines the scope of use as 'interactive multiplayer gaming services for games played over computer networks and global communications networks.' The Messenger points out that Microsoft's game brand Xbox may have been behind this.

Meta filed a trademark registration for 'X' in 2017 and was granted in June 2019. Microsoft simply registers it as an uppercase X, but in the case of Meta it also registers a symbol like '][' drawn in white and blue.

Trademark Status & Document Retrieval

Meta has applied for ``streaming video and audio content'', ``providing online forums for sending messages between computer users'', and ``providing Internet chat rooms'' as the scope of trademark use.

The Messenger says Twitter's parent company X may have to argue in court that the old Twitter is a different service than those offered by Microsoft and Meta.

Certainly, both Microsoft and Meta have registered trademarks to the extent that they do not assume SNS like Twitter. However, Twitter is a network that can be used for games, and it is possible to stream video and audio and exchange messages between users, so if Microsoft and Meta claim that they are infringing their trademark rights, it will develop into a trial.

Ed Timberlake, a former examiner and trademark attorney at the US Patent and Trademark Office, said, ``Meta can make a strong claim when it comes to the white and blue symbols.Microsoft's claim is ``X'' itself.

Meta and Microsoft did not respond to The Messenger's request for comment, but Twitter said it returned an automated message saying 'I'll get back to you soon.'
