A system that applies the heat storage of bricks to storage batteries has appeared

Rondo Energy, which develops industrial storage batteries, has developed an innovative heat storage system using bricks. Rondo Energy explained the mechanism of the system that can be used at 20% of the cost of existing chemical batteries.

Although wind power and solar power generation are environmentally friendly because they do not generate carbon during the power generation process, their power generation capacity is affected by the surrounding environment, and they may not be able to supply all the power they need in an emergency. Therefore, when using these, a method is adopted in which storage batteries are installed side by side to store electricity and discharge when necessary.

The heat storage system developed by Rondo Energy uses 'bricks'. When power is supplied to the system, the electric heater generates heat, rapidly warming the surrounding objects. Thousands of tons of bricks are directly heated by this thermal radiation and store energy for hours to days with very low losses of less than 1% per day. By blowing air onto the heated bricks, the bricks are heated and steam is used to turn a turbine to generate electricity.

The method of storing heat in bricks has been used for a long time in the steel industry, etc., but this time the system was able to achieve the best because of computational fluid dynamics by supercomputers, finite element analysis, and system control by AI. It is said that it is a new one. It uses materials that are much cheaper than existing storage batteries, does not contain toxic substances, and has no components that deteriorate over time. It is said that the heat can be stored in the same way even after 40 or 50 years.

Rondo Energy CEO John O'Donnell said, 'We are making something very simple, but the design was very interesting and complicated.' Bill Gates and others are also paying attention to this system, and Mr. O'Donnell and others are collecting funds for realization.
