Technology for new space suit developed by NASA may reduce symptoms of menopause

In order for astronauts to operate safely in space, where the temperature difference is extreme, with a maximum temperature of 120 degrees under the sun and minus 160 degrees in the shade, space suits must have high heat insulation properties in addition to being airtight. You can Technology once developed by NASA for space suits is about to be applied to alleviate menopausal symptoms.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 1.3 million Americans experience menopausal symptoms each year. One of the symptoms of menopause is that the body temperature control system does not work well due to the modulation of the autonomic nervous system, especially postmenopausal women have a sudden high fever called 'hot flash'. Modulation of thermoregulation associated with menopause that lasts for years leads to a decline in physical strength.

Louise Nicholson, who established an apparel maker for middle-aged and elderly people in London, wanted to help women suffering from menopause to spend the summer comfortably, but there was no such clothes anywhere.

As a result of searching for clothes that can stay cool even if the body temperature rises rapidly due to hot flashes, Mr. Nicholson seems to have arrived at a technology called NASA's 'Outlast'.

In the 1980s, NASA's Johnson Space Center was looking for ways to improve the insulation of space suit gloves. This is where “phase change materials” are applied. A phase change material is a material that maintains a constant temperature when changing phases from solid to liquid or from liquid to solid. It seems that by kneading the microcapsules embedded with this phase change material into the material used for space suit gloves, it was shown that the temperature inside the space suit is constant.

Outlast technology using this phase change material was not finally used in space, but Gateway Technologies (later Outlast Technologies) acquired exclusive patent rights from a private company that later developed in cooperation with NASA As a result, Mr. Nicholson started selling clothes incorporating Outlast. It seems that this Outlast is used not only for menopausal shirts, but also for accessories such as scarves, face masks, and turbans.

In long-term space missions, female menstruation is one of the most important health issues for astronauts. NASA is said to be researching technology using long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) and intrauterine contraceptive devices, but it seems that both are still in the early stages.
