This was revealed in a report summarizing the contents of a survey conducted by Ponemon Institute and Proofpoint, which conduct surveys on cyber risk, to 641 IT and security personnel in medical institutions.
According to the report, 89% of surveyed medical institutions suffered at least one cyberattack in the past year. The average number is 43, and the cyberattacks are cloud compromise, ransomware, supply chain, business email compromise (BEC), spoofing & phishing.
The biggest impact of cyberattacks is delays in treatment and testing, leading to poor prognosis for patients at 57% of medical institutions, and an increase in complications. In particular, when limited to ransomware attacks, 64% of medical institutions reported delays in testing and treatment, and 59% of hospitalizations for patients were prolonged.
Of the more than 26,000 network-connected devices owned by medical institutions on average, 51% of institutions surveyed this time included these network-connected devices in their cybersecurity strategies. More than 60% of medical institutions have taken measures for cloud security, but in general, about 40% of medical institutions were vulnerable to attacks.
The financial cost to medical institutions due to cyber attacks is large, averaging $4.4 million (about 627 million yen) over the past year.
Regarding the report, it has been pointed out that all figures are self-reported by medical institutions, and epidemiological studies do not have the weight of changes in mortality rates before and after cyber attacks, for example, but the content of the report is the same as the 2021 report . There is a trend of , and there are many reports of patients actually dying or becoming complicating due to the effects of ransomware attacks.
