Bees attacked by 'murder wasps' scream violently

Mammals and birds may raise the cry of warning against fellow when the enemy came, but bees also, Asian giant hornet found from (Murder Hornets / murder wasp) in reaction to violent scream things investigation rice field.

Giant hornets are known to collectively attack bee nests, kill adults, and feed larvae to young giant hornets in their nests.

Heather Mattila, an associate professor of biological science at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, USA, was originally investigating the defensive behavior of honeybees in Vietnam to 'keep the giant hornet away from animals.'

Bees are found to protect themselves from wasps by applying 'animal droppings' around their nests-GIGAZINE

One day, Associate Professor Mattila noticed that the bees were noisy near the nest. Associate Professor Mattila said that while talking to a colleague, he began to think about the possibility that 'the noise of honeybees will increase when the giant hornet appears or immediately after it leaves.'

To test the above hypothesis, researchers filmed hives and recorded bee sounds at three apiary colonies from late August to October 2013. Then, using a tool that visualizes audio, catalog the sounds produced by bees. Finally, the sound produced by the honeybee was compared with the activity of natural enemies such as the giant hornet outside the nest, and it was investigated whether a specific sound pattern could be associated with the activity of the natural enemy. The results showed that the giant hornet screams louder and more violently when the giant hornet appears than other wasps such as the Asian hornet.

Basically, honeybees make a 'shoe' sound even if natural enemies do not appear, but researchers write that when the giant hornet appears, the sound becomes louder and a dissonant sound is created. There is also a specific sound that the giant hornet makes when it comes near the nest, and although it does not have a regular pattern, it is characterized by being repeated many times. Since the frequency of this sound changes rapidly, it tends to be 'harsh noise' as a whole.

Also, when researchers observed the behavior of honeybees using paper soaked with the 'smell' used by giant hornets that attack honeybees, they also heard that screams occurred. However, further research is needed to understand the role of bee 'screams' against predators.
