It is reported that a North American river otter attacks people and dogs in Anchorage, Alaska, USA, and state authorities are searching for the North American river otter. According to the science news site Live Science, there were three otter attacks in Anchorage in September 2021, one of which injured a child.

Nine-year-old Aiden Fernandez was filming four North American river otters in a pond with his younger brother, and one of them suddenly left the herd and attacked Aiden. Aiden ran away in a hurry, but was bitten by multiple otters when he stumbled and fell.

His mother, Tiffany Fernandez, told local media Anchorage Daily News that there were two traces of North American river otter fangs behind Aiden's thighs and one on the front of the thighs. He also said that he had a wound on his back. Aiden was immediately taken to the emergency hospital and vaccinated against rabies.

It seems that otters rarely attack other animals,

and according to a study published in 2011, 39 wild otter attacks have been reported in the United States since 1875. Fifteen of them occurred in Florida, and 24 of the perpetrators of otters suffered from rabies.

However, including Aiden's case, the city of Anchorage reported three attacks by North American river otters in late September 2021 alone, including a woman trying to help the dog being attacked and another. The dog was attacked. Furthermore, in 2019, there was an incident in which two dogs were dragged into the water by a North American river otter while swimming in a lake. At this time, the owner jumped into the lake and helped the dog, so there was no difference in life, but the dog's body had bites and cuts.

David Battle, a wildlife biologist at the Alaska Fisheries and Hunting Authority (ADFG), predicts that only a particular group of North American river otters are involved in the series of incidents. A herd of North American river otters consists of a mother with children or multiple single males, but given that multiple otters attacked, Mr. Battle did not attack the mother to protect the child, but multiple males. It is inferred that the crime was committed by a group of people.

Based on traditional theory, it can be interpreted that the attack of the North American river otter is a defensive instinct against dogs, but Mr. Battle said, 'Most otters do not react so strongly to humans and dogs. The North American river otter is a curious animal, but it is not very aggressive towards humans and dogs. ' I'm pointing out.

ADFG is searching for a herd of North American river otters that are the perpetrators of a series of incidents, but it is not difficult to capture because they do not have fixed territories and can move extensively along waterways. Mr. Battle said.
