80% of organizations that pay ransoms after being attacked with ransomware are attacked again



A report compiled by cybersecurity company Cybereason has been published on the damage caused by ransomware attacks that are spreading worldwide.

According to Cybereason, ransomware attacks occur at an average rate of once every 11 seconds, with damages estimated at $20 billion in 2020 alone. According to the FBI, the damages in the United States alone have increased by 225% compared to the previous year.

Of the 1,263 organizations that responded to this survey, 66% said they had suffered revenue loss as a direct result of a ransomware attack, with little impact based on company size.

Below is a count of organizations by industry that reported revenue losses, suggesting that no matter what industry you are in, a ransomware attack will result in some kind of loss.



Here is a breakdown by region: Spain had the highest percentage of responding organizations reporting losses, at 80%.



In addition, the majority of organizations that have been attacked by ransomware in the past and have chosen to pay the ransom have not been immune to subsequent attacks. In fact, 80% of organizations that paid the ransom were 'attacked again,' and half of those were attacked by the same group that had attacked them the first time.
